The tree grows in the evergreen forests of equatorial Africa, from Guinea to Angola, from Nigeria to Congo. The wood is differentiated with whitish sapwood and coral red heartwood which tends to darken over time. The texture is medium and the grain straight. Wood works well and takes a great finish. It is used in exterior joinery, stairs, floor boards and in cabinet making for furniture, furnishing items, decorative veneers, musical instruments and for knife handles and various tools.
